Recovering missing iPlayer icon from PS3

OK, I was going to make my first post after the house burnt down about that, but frankly life’s too short.  Check out the pics. on Picasa if you’re interested.  Instead, this is about missing icons on the Playstation 3 after update 3.7.0.I update my PS3 to 3.70 last week, and noticed that most of my TV icons had disappeared (such as 4OD).  I did have the LoveFilm download icon, my installed PlayTV and iPlayer (which I’d recently also downloaded).  But the others were gone.

I wasn’t alone either;  there’s supposed to be a “my channels” icon plus a slew of others, and the lot had gone missing.  Several people were saying things like log out & log in, update Home and/or VidZone (!), even reset the PS3.  Er, no thanks.  The ‘safe’ options didn’t work for me either.

I deleted the installed iPlayer to see if it was in the way, and … no, it was just deleted, so I was worse off than before.

However, I did find one small thread somewhere that pointed to a trick that had worked for everyone who’d tried it.  And it worked for me!  So here it is:

Go to the Games tab of the XMB, then move up/down to the PSN Store icon.  Wait for the 6 adverts to appear to the side.  I actually navigated around these too, I don’t know if that was necessary.  Then move back to to new TV tab of the XMB and voilà, the “my channels” icon is present.

From there you can download the iPlayer, etc., icons.

Update [Jan 2012]: a lot of people are seeing that, with the latest firmware, you can fix the problem by going into Home and doing an update.  So, although that didn’t originally work for me, give it a try (you might also want to un-install it first as well if simply updating doesn’t do the do).

Create a new user, log in as that user, then log back into your original account. Worked for me.

Yes, if you haven’t been into Playstation Home in a while, run it and install any updates as promted. You should then see the new “My Channels” listed on the XMB. Worked for me too.

Thanks, updated ps home worked a treat, but it’s a joke that the ps3 few update didn’t automatically include the ‘my channels’ in the XMB.

It would be cool if you could update the article with the PS Home advice mentioned in the comments, as that is what fixed the issue for me and this article appears first in Google for relevant searches 🙂

Why is it we’re all left figuring this stuff out on our own? Man, tech used to come with these weird booklet things that told you how to work them. User Manuals we used to call them.

I’m half expecting PS4 will be a featureless white chrome orb that will just sit in the middle of all our living rooms until some community geek figures out you have to kick it twelve times, roll it across the floor and then sit on it to get it to start working.

Cheers for the PS Home tip though!
